How to Set Your Freelance Rate With Confidence

Most freelancers set their rates based on what they think clients will accept rather than what they actually need to earn. This is a mistake that compounds over time. Your rate needs to cover your living expenses, your business costs, your taxes, your time off, and ideally leave something for savings and investment.

The calculator above gives you your minimum viable rate. In practice, you should charge more than this minimum to account for the fact that not every hour you work is billable, that client acquisition takes time, and that your skills and experience have market value beyond your cost of living.

Research what other freelancers with your skills and experience level are charging in your market. If your calculated minimum is significantly below the market rate, charge the market rate. If it is above, either find ways to reduce your costs or position yourself at the premium end of the market where your rate is justified by the quality and results you deliver.
