Late fees are calculated as a percentage of the original invoice amount for each month or part of a month that the invoice remains unpaid. The standard late fee rate for most freelancers and small businesses is between 1.5 and 2 percent per month.
To calculate your late fee manually, multiply your invoice amount by your monthly rate percentage, then multiply by the number of months overdue. The most important thing is to state your late fee policy clearly on every invoice before payment is due.
